About this Blog

Momfidence! cheers on commonsense parenting and sighs at the rest. How to worry less, wing it more. A.k.a. parenting by the seat of my mid-rise mom jeans.

About Paula Spencer

I'm the author of Momfidence! An Oreo Never Killed Anybody and Other Secrets of Happier Parenting, and a mom of four in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (where you can't even buy Oreos at the two wholesome groceries nearest to my home).

No, THIS Is the Week's Lighten-Up-and-Eat-a-Cookie Award!!

August 14, 2008
This week's true Lighten-Up-and-Eat-a-Cookie Award is related to the one bestowed yesterday. Only worse.

It goes to the moms--and the spa salon operators who enable them in the name of making a buck--who variously believe that:

* Females should begin waxing body hair at 6 (no typo, SIX)
* Eight is not too young to have brows shaped...or a bikini wax
* Or for that matter 10-and 12-year-olds should be going anywhere near hot wax.

Beware the new "trend" inching inland from the coasts. Twenty percent of bikini waxes at a Beverly Hills spa are for the 10-to-12 set.  "For waxing, 12 is the new normal," we're told.

I thought it was comical when my preteen was begging for highlights. (Just last night, in fact, for which I blame unfettered access to cable here at the beach.)

Momfidence is...
...Showing daughters free, safe, and age-appropriate ways to feel good about themselves and how they look.

...And then, at puberty, showing them tweezers and a razor.

Absolutely un-be-lieve-able! I'm all for the tweezers and razors myself - at puberty, not elementary!
