More TVs in the Kids' Bedrooms than Biological Fathers in the House?August 18, 2008
More skewed views of childhood from the UK (see also: post below).
Eighty percent of British children have televisions in their bedrooms, more than have their biological fathers at home. Fifty-eight percent of British children eat their evening meal in front of the television (a British child spends more than five hours per day watching a screen); 36 percent never eat any meals together with other family members; and 34 percent of households do not even own dining tables. I don't have time to check how US stats compare. But really, you must read this entire piece by Theodore Dalrymple. My jaw's still dropped. New insights into what the author of that British Medical Journal piece (below) might have been thinking about! |
