Momfidence! cheers on commonsense parenting and sighs at the rest. How to worry less, wing it more. A.k.a. parenting by the seat of my mid-rise mom jeans.

Be Brave. Go Outside.

August 26, 2008
There's talk of a surge in vitamin D deficiency -- which can cause rickets -- in children and even young babies. Today's NYT, for example, shows how it starts with breastfeeding. Moms think it's the perfect food for babies -- and it nearly is -- but  the problem seems to be that when moms are deficient in vitamin D to begin with, not enough passes through the milk to the baby. And many parents shun vitamin drops these days, compounding the deficiency.

Why are we deficient in vitamin D? Nobody goes outside any more! Vitamin D also comes from sun exposure. Adults don't walk around anywhere outside. Kids don't play outside. Babies aren't taken outside. (And when anybody does go out, they're slathered in sunblock.)

Says the AAP's nutrition committee chair: “Historically speaking, we probably got it from the sun, but now we’re afraid of the sun and we don’t go out as much.”
