Calvin & Hobbes IS a Book!

August 28, 2008
I personally dislike Jon Scieszka's (The Stinky Cheese Man) books but he's the current (and first) "national ambassador for young people's reading" -- a very useful role.

And I like what he told the LA Times"My first tip is to include not just fiction in your idea of reading. Include graphic novels, include "Calvin and Hobbes." Third- and fourth-grade boys devour those -- and they're really sophisticated, but parents will say, 'Oh, that's not really reading.' "

Man we've got some tattered C&H books around here....

I remember my son reading a Star Wars graphic novel and someone tsk-tsking me for it; another friend, who was also a librarian, smiled and said, "As long as it gets them to read. . . and keeps them reading, it is a good book." Wise words that I have lived by; my kids are all avid readers and they do read lots of C&H (so do I!!) and (age-appropriate) graphic novels.

Wonder if reading messages and game instructions at Club Penguin counts? I'm gonna say yes...

I had forgotten about Calvin & Hobbes! I have an 11 year old boy, so I stopped by the used book store on the way home yesterday, and he was devouring it last night! He even said "thanks, Mom, I love this!". Thank you for reminding me!
