About this Blog

Momfidence! cheers on commonsense parenting and sighs at the rest. How to worry less, wing it more. A.k.a. parenting by the seat of my mid-rise mom jeans.

Don't Allow It Then Complain About It

October 30, 2008

Head-scratcher quote of the day: "I can’t help thinking something’s wrong in a family where a person whose only source of income is part-time work as a barista ends up owning the year’s hottest tech toy [iPhone] ahead of her father, a man who loves gadgets so much that he writes about them for a living."

That's the mother writing, the mother who gave her 17-y-o child the phone and is now complaining about it, the mother who is writing a column about teenagers borrowing your (her) clothes without permission (she's complaining about it).

Of course there is something wrong here. Helplessness! The moms get to make the rules. The dads get to buy the gadgets they want first. What am I missing here?

What I don't understand is why so many parents have ceded control to their children. Do they think it's easier? Better for the child? What? It seems to me that all it leads to is spoiled, inconsiderate children who think the world revolves around them. It's time we got back to basics and parents started acting like parents.

The parents take the easy way out, and want to be friends rather than parents and then complain they are not respected the way a parent should be.
The only way around that is to be the parent, act the parent all the time and realise that they're going be hated one minute and loved the next.
That's life! or should I say , That's the way it ought to be.
