Grandparents Keeping Grandkids Busy = Time for You

November 14, 2008

Grandparents know everything about raising kids, right? After all theirs never really cried, never back sassed their parents, never ran around quite so wildly, and always ate what was put on the plate in front of them....

Despite their sometimes mythic-memories, I learned loads of insights on childrearing insights from my mother and mother-in-law. But let's face it, passing time has an amnesiac quality which makes certain of life's details grow a little fuzzy. (Doesn't pregnancy seem long ago and far away by the time your baby's toddling...much less taking driver's ed?!)

A grandparent can get rusty at finding fun and rewarding ways to hang out with a child -- other than firing up the Wii. That's why I really liked this simple but well-done guide 100 Free Things to Do With Your Grandchild from grandparents.com. The whole site is fun to browse, with a strong activity section, and there's a holiday guide as well, though I especially like the no-nonsense basics in the things-to-do-guide.

Tip off your Mom, or download the guide and give it to her as an early freebie present next time she's over. (Actually I wish I'd had it when I was a Brownie leader!)

Oh the drama this would cause if I were to give it to my overly defensive mother-in-law. "So now I don't even know how to PLAY with the kids right?!"

Steph - bummer about your mother-in-law...would she be offended if you gave her resources like this - things like free things she can do with the grandkids? In some ways it could be looked at more like you trust her to spend time with them and you want her to do so - so you're giving her some ideas! Would love to know how you build relationship with her so your kids aren't in the middle! I know it can be tough!
