What I Don't Like About Tween Dora

March 17, 2009

Awhile back there was a brouhaha over the silhouette of the new "pre-teen" Dora the Explorer doll and cartoon being introduced for 5-8 year-olds after the outgrow the little cartoon girl the preschooler set inexplicably adores. (Full confession: When Dora debuted, I was dismayed by the idea of a cartoon girl who lived in a computer, since I was trying to keep my kids off the computer for as long as possible. So I never bought anything Dora.)

Anyway, there was a lot of talk about whether she would be too slim and sexy. She's not -- she's wearing a blousy tunic and leggings, pretty standard tween fare. She seems normal-sized. Long-haired, cute.

It's the earrings I can't stand. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but I don't want my 5- to 8-year-old coveting them, and won't let my preteens wear them.

Haven't seen any of that "down under" but haven't really looked either. Will have to check it out. I'm curious whether this new dora will actually last. I was glad that Deigo came out since my 3 yr old son loved Dora so much. Good thing about these characters is that my kids get to learn basic words and numbers in other languages. I didn't mind Dora but couldn't stand Numberjacks - just something about them rubbed me up the wrong way.

Whenever I think of Dora the Explorer I always think of Brian Reagan's skit about the show...he's hilarious if you haven't seen him yet. Here is a you tube video of it--not the best video, but you get the point:

Im kind of glad shes not so chubby anymore... because i think the fact that she alaways bought "candy, icecream" rly set me off... and i heard something about boots.... he got the "boot" and i think they did the earings because, well, shes mexican... idk it matches somehow. and i think it will be al least better than those slutty-ass bratz...

You women need to get a life if you are worried about a doll influencing your children with the way she looks. Better home school your kids and never take them in public because they are going to see kids wearing earrings and such wherever they go. Dora's earrings aren't bad anyway. How does a pair of little earrings make any difference in how a child is going to turn out. My daughter had her ears pierced at age three. She is a college graduate with a teaching degree.

i think tween-dora is ok, it is not the smartest thing though because a lot of little girls with get used to her, they might go to school and think, i wan tto be just like her, (thinking u may skip around yelling swippers name or something weird like that...)

i also think it was not the best idea to make the doll that u can put make-up on, first of all thats coping the barbie makeup face, second of all, little girls that LOVE dora would want that, if they got it they would think, ohhhhh i want makeup mommy, although she is not nearly as bad as those terrible bratz, like shelby said :-D
