Labor: Walk It Out

April 21, 2009

In labor? Stay on your feet! A major review combining data from 21 studies finds that women who lay down -- in any position -- during first-stage labor have slower labors and are more likely to need an epidural than those who sit upright, stand, or walk. (First-stage labor is that endless journey from 3cm to10cm dilation.)

For me it was instinctive. I remember when during my first labor when they'd make me get into the bed to be monitored periodically...finally my doctor ok'd a walking monitor. It was a long labor anyway (12 hrs) but I just didn't feel comfortable lying in bed til near transition. Ditto all my other childbirths...

Trouble with being put right in bed is that the medical machine takes over and you have no idea what's instinctive any more. And if anything should be instinctive it's the process of a human being coming out of your body. After all it's instinct that got it in there in the first place.

For me it was "instinctual" to literally roll around on the floor in the emergency room while yelling out my name, birthdate and social security number for any and all to hear (my husband had to park our truck). Thankfully it was 5 am so there was only one elderly lady seated nearby... she did however, give me a stern look that said I was not acting very ladylike...

Very funny picture...Better animallike (momlike?) than ladylike, under the circumstances!

All of mine were active births esp the 2nd and 3rd. Did lie down with the 1st and it took longer and hurt more with being on my back. Squatting on the bed with my belly into a bean bag was wonderful too. That's I gave birth to the 2nd and 3rd. Mine were all fast labours - 1st 5hrs 45 mins; 2nd 3 hrs 33 mins; and 3rd 39 mins. Really feel for the women who have really long labours - it must be awful.
Love the rolling around on the floor. I probably would have joined you.

Thanks for pointing this story out, Paula. I'm about two months from my due date and figure that gravity does make sense...I'm not ready for a home birth but I do want the chance to be as active as possible at the hospital.

My labor lasted all of 90 minutes and I STILL begged for an epidural. Had to walk to the ER entrance from the main entrance (closed after hours) so maybe that helped. ;-)
