My Rush Limbaugh Moment

March 28, 2007
Rush Limbaugh apparently read most of my Newsweek "My Turn" column on hyper-protecting kids on his show this afternoon!

My big brother--for whom this is about the coolest Brush With Fame (make that Rush With Fame?) imaginable--heard it and alerted me, but I was at a doctor's appointment and got the message too late to catch it.

Anyway as you can imagine, lots of people were tuned in to hear Rush call it a "fascinating, fascinating piece... right up my alley" and muse about how long I would last in Chapel Hill after having written this. (Funny--because I often mention that myself when I give talks! But so far I'm still here and even finding kindred spirits.)

Even though the column and radio mention haven't made any link to my Momfidence book, website, blog or Woman's Day column, a bunch of great people have nevertheless tracked me down through the grace of Google and took time to write:

"It was refreshing to know there is at least one other mom out there with some degree of common sense."

"I need your article!"

"Thanks for putting it into words and putting it out there."

"Thank you for being a voice of common sense. They are rare today."

"I've since read many of your articles and enjoyed every single word--I've passed them to several of my "young mom" friends--so they might quit worrying and start parenting."

I know it sounds immodest to share those quotes but I was just so touched that people bothered to track me down when there wasn't a quick handy link to find me.

(Ditto the comments at "Newsweek My Turn, Who Is Paula Spencer?" below.)

PS: To read the transcript or hear the segment you have to  become a Rush 24/7 member for $6 for the month...but if you do you can also get to the page that says "A fabulous Paula Spencer column..." , which is way cool!

Paula... I heard every word of it on Rush yesterday, and I was laughing out loud with delight. You go, girl!! Susan Trotman (in Nashville) heard it too and called me pronto!! What a great moment. And right on target.... We need to catch up, but I couldn't resist leaving a note on your website. Kudos!

All right, Paula! Just heard Rush reading your email on his show. It blows my mind that your local papers, NPR, etc. won't touch your book! I also thought that it was really weird that Newsweek didn't even mention the book, or at least that you are an author (I blogged on this: www.thezenofmotherhood.blogspot.com). Anyway, I hope that the Newsweek essay and mentions on Rush expose a whole new audience to Momfidence!

Paula,

I too, heard all about you on Rush today. Way to go! I have long told my friends that lots of parenting is simply common sense and also in not being "afraid" to parent to our children. Amazing how many parents are living vicariously through their children and never say "no." God forbid we ever disappoint a child! Can't wait to see how they handle their first "mommy is not here to protect me" disappointment.

By the way, I Googled you too.

I never thought I would say this, but thank God for Rush. I heard him talking about you and I, too, Googled you tonight. You and your Momfidence approach is exactly what I was looking for just this week.

I just started a new blog (who hasn't, right?) and have been mulling over some thoughts about being both a laid-back parent and one who is not afraid of being the boss rather than the buddy. One whose guilt or fear does not define her actions. Lo and behold, I find you.

It's late and I should be in bed (I have a toddler and a nursing baby), but I am loving what I've read so far and just have to send some mighty thanks your way. This has been the perfect bedtime story for me tonight.

Dear Paula,

I have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. For that reason, I am not able to read a book because I can't hold it in my hands. I am able, with the help of assistive devices, to have full use of my notebook computer. That's how I came to hear Rush Limbaugh read your article in Newsweek magazine.

I ordered your Momfidance book for my wife, so hopefully she will have time to read it to me. (New books are typically not released in E-Book format.)

I appreciate your common sense approach to parenting. Thank you for speaking out against the fear-mongering that's so prevalent among the media elites.

I ORDERED YOUR BOOK AFTER HEARING YOU ON RUSH. I THINK THIS WILL BE A GREAT BOOK FOR DADFIDENCE ALSO.

Paula says...

Thanks, all. Don't miss my theories on Dadfidence on page 11...am open to hearing other thoughts on the topic, too!

Heard you on Rush, googled you and am now reading your book that I bought from Amazon. I feel like a weight has been lifted off me! I am not crazy - there really are other Moms that think like me! My kids have even read some of the chapters because they see me laughing out loud (too rare of a site). I made my husband read the spoil sport chapter - boy that does that hit home. I have 3 boys (ages 10, 12, 14) and baseball is our "elite" tournament sport. What genius came up with that system - it splits up our family so much. I could go on and on about all the parallels in our lives...suffice it to say you have a kindred spirit in Northern VA, also a very PC area. (lived in the RTP area for 12 years though!) The wisdom in your book has given me a boost of confidence I really needed - thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have no idea how much I needed to hear all this right now. I feel so outnumbered sometimes and I doubt myself way too much. I look forward to reading more. I think our children are close in age. Are you surviving the teenage years??

Paula says...

I just have a baby toe in the teen years. (One 14-yr-old.) The analogies to toddlerhood are not incorrect....
